Taiwan - Night Market

Kenting had a really big night market. Lots of food and games.  Since the temperature gets so hot in the summer, we assumed people like to go out at night instead of during the day. There was some food that smelled so bad that we had to hold our noses to walk by. We never figured out what it was. A few places had big bowls of tiny shells.  We assumed that you put the shells in your mouth and suck out the broth in the shells that they were soaking in. We didn't try any food from the night market.

These people had baskets and was picking out various food to eat.

Someone getting a head massage.

Unknown meat on a stick.

This tree only blooms at night.

This food stand looked like the back of a car.

This sign didn't translate correctly. We really laughed at this one. Notice the spelling of cooperation.

Taiwan Trip - Snorkeling and Sailing

The kids really enjoyed snorkeling for the first time.  Anna got a little scared once. She said a fish was following her and wouldn't leave her alone.  They both were afraid of the eels.

Taiwan Trip - Part 3

More pictures of the beach resort in Kenting.

Shells are much different than in Carolina.

We took a private tour of the southern portion of the island. We rode in a pink van.

Our tour guide asked what this rock looked like. Greg said Obama. She laughed and said that no one ever quessed that before.

This looks like lava fields in Hawaii.  It's actually coral. Most of this island was underwater It's not a volcano like other islands.

They have land crabs. There is even a land crab crossing sign.

This beach was off limits to everyone. The sand was about 93% crushed shells. We saw a display of the types of beaches here. It was amazing to see these tiny crushed shells under a microscope. It was closed because of the US and other countries came in the past and took shiploads of it away.

This is the lighthouse on the southern most tip of Taiwan.  It had huge brick wall all around it. It was also used like a fort.

We think this sign said beware of snakes. So, Greg sent Jackson over to stand next to the bushes.

This was a trash can. I was walking around looking for one. Our tour guide had to show it to us.

Greg and Jackson got fresh coconuts to drink. They were really cold.

Anna picked out this pretty dress in the night market in Kenting.

Taiwan has it's own money. We spent many 1,000 bills. The conversion is $30 to 1 Taiwan dollar.  When Greg paid the bill in the hotel, they said that will be $37,000.  Greg hesitated and remembered that it wasn't that much when you divide by 30.

Taiwan Trip - Part 2

For the second part of our trip in Taiwan, we stayed at the Chateau Beach Resort in Kenting. It was a private beach in southern Taiwan. The resort had 7 pools, spa and lots of activities for the kids. They enjoyed swimming in the pool and ocean, sailing, archery and even went snorkeling. The weather was perfect, around 80 degrees and sunny. I think we were the only non-Asian people at the resort.  No one spoke English except one employee at the resort that really helped us out in planning our activities. We had buffet breakfast each morning and buffet one night.  There was some strange food there. The kids did find a few things that they would eat.  There were some things there that Greg wouldn't even try!

First class on the high speed train in Taiwan.

Views from the high speed train.

View from our balcony at the resort.

Another view from our balcony.

Mountain on the back side of the resort.

They had these really cool hammocks on the edge of the beach under the trees.

Greg and the kids found some people to play volleyball with.

The waves were too big the first day for swimming.

View from one of the pools looking out into the ocean.

The kids took archery lessons for two days. They were concerned about their age and said they needed to be 12 years or older. Since they learned how to do archery at the YMCA and YGuides, they were better than any of the adults.  Jackson hit the target almost every time.

Since it wasn't a Taiwan holiday, there weren't may kids their age there.  Nice having the beach to ourselves for a few days.
